Adopt a Gold Star Family
The idea for the Gold Star Family program began in the summer of 2013 when I met a Vietnam Gold
Star mother whose son had been killed in Vietnam two days before Christmas in 1969. When I asked what she did on that date, her reply was “I don’t have much family around and have outlived most of my friends. I usually spend it alone in my apartment.” I could not allow that to happen again. I organized a dinner that year on the 23rd of Dec. There were more than 75 in attendance, with many Vietnam veterans. I would do this dinner every year until Mary passed away in Oct of 2018. That was the inspiration for the program. I knew there was more to be done. It has since grown to 27
families in two states.
My wife and I meet with each of these families on what they call their “Angelversary”. We always show up with a dozen yellow roses, a personalized card, and if the child has a scholarship or foundation, we are able to make a nice donation. The main fund raiser has been an annual raffle of various items, and individual and organization donations. The only expense involved of this fund is the cost of the raffle tickets each year; every other dime goes directly to the families. My wife and I are the sole operators and organizers of this program.
Tickets can be purchased using the Venmo QR code or contacting me at rftwken@yahoo.com . We will be at the Woodsmen Field Days this year, please stop by to support or to get more info about this amazing program.
